The eHow Stimulus Package

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

ehow-mashable-stimulus-package-022609The U.S. government may have just released their stimulus package, but eHow has been stimulating our minds and pocketbooks for quite a while now.  It’s no wonder Mashable.com mentioned eHow in two different articles last week.  eHow was listed as site numero uno on, “30+ Websites to Visit when You’re Laid Off.” We are proud that our vibrant community has welcomed many new users in the past months. The forums are abuzz with old members showing the newbies the ropes. eHow was also noted as having one of the largest collections of tutorials on the web in,  “How to Guide: 60+ Great How to Sites and Resources.”  We hope that the eHow community continues to inspire each other and produce quality content to maintain our great word of mouth.

On a different note…here are some great photos we took at our Twiist Up Event two weeks ago. Thanks to everyone that attended and voted for us. Enjoy!

Cleaning Up on eHow

Friday, February 20th, 2009

cloner-clean-up-3

Hi everyone,

In an effort to maintain the quality of our articles and the integrity of our community we’re doing some cleaning up on eHow.  We want to continue to keep eHow a place where members and visitors come to exchange information and learn from one another.  This is only possible if we maintain unique quality content.  We’ve recently updated our system to detect “clone articles” and “unsuitable articles” in addition to plagiarized articles.

You may be wondering, what is a clone article?  Well as you all know, it is unacceptable on eHow to create multiple articles with the same body of content and different titles. In other words, users are prohibited from essentially publishing the same article repeatedly, changing only one or two steps or the title.  We consider this SPAM.

Unfortunately, these users are saturating our database with articles that are topical duplicates - -topically the same article with only a few words changed.  This not only hurts our community but it also negatively impacts your articles.  These articles make the quality of our content unattractive to visitors and it over loads our database and robs serious members of the chance to get quality content noticed.
We would like eHow to continue to be a place where users utilize the library of informative articles and in turn help members get the article views that they want as well as earn money for their quality contributions. This is simply not possible with clone articles.

Our system will also detect and flag unsuitable articles.   These articles are usually not informative, do not contain unique content, or do not follow the submission guidelines. When an article is detected by the system as either a clone, unsuitable, or plagiarized article, the member will receive a messaging notifying them that their articles has been flagged and will be deleted.  Clone and unsuitable articles will be deleted from the database.  Members who receive the plagiarism notice will receive a chance to appeal.

Please submit the appeals form within 48 HOURS of receipt of the plagiarism notice.  If you submit your appeal within the 48 hour window your article will remain live on the site until our editorial team reviews your appeal.  If you do not appeal within the 48 hour window your article will be suspended from the site until you appeal and the editorial team reviews and renders a decision.  If you have any further questions contact us through the contact us page.

We hope that these changes will help keep eHow a rockin’ place and look forward to seeing everyone’s awesome contributions!

Thanks,
The eHow Staff

eHow Makes Facebook Easy

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

If you ask, we will deliver.  Many of our users have been asking for an easier way to showcase their articles on Facebook and <drum roll please> we’re proud to introduce two brand new features on eHow for Facebook users!  If you have commented on another user’s article recently, you may have spotted this first Facebook tool.  This Facebook tool can be found on the comments section of eHow articles.  After typing in your comment in the Post Comment section, you can check the Facebook box that says “Post this comment to my Facebook Profile,” and your comment will not only post to eHow but also to your Facebook Profile.

If you’ve published any articles recently, you may have noticed this second Facebook tool.  When you are done writing your eHow article and would like to publish it simultaneously to your Facebook profile, simply check the box with the Facebook logo that says “When publishing this Article, also post a link to it on my Facebook Profile.”  Then click the “Publish Article” button and ta-da…your eHow article will not only be published to eHow but also on your Facebook profile.  This new feature is a great marketing tool and will enable you to promote your eHow article and reach a newer audience on Facebook.  We hope you enjoy these two new features!

ehow-blog-21109-washington-post-and-us-news

Wow what a week!  Our eHow members are kicking some major behind and making some waves in national news.   The Washington Post and U.S. News and World Report recently ran stories on our very own eHow members, David Sarokin, ccrock, and Writergig.  Many of you know David Sarokin or have chatted with him on the eHow Forums.  He told The Washington Post reporters of how he utilizes his researching and writing skills to make $25,000 a year on eHow. (Yes, that comma IS in the right place…that’s twenty-five thousand dollars ya’ll)

The U.S. News and World Report, showcased eHow as one of the, 7 Ways to Make Extra Money,” online and wrote about the success stories of Writergig and ccrock.  Both these ladies are work at home moms and have published on eHow to supplement their family incomes - but their online activities don’t stop there.  As you know from our previous post, Writergig is a guru on optimizing articles on eHow and recently aired a podcast with eHow member, A. Suzanne Wells.  As for ccrock,  she helped spread the word about eHow by modeling for our banners ads and by writing about eHow on her personal blog, Smokin’ Mom.  eHow is steadily proving that it’s not just another social networking site but a highly interactive community where people can share their expertise and earn some well deserved bonus income.  Keep the great work everyone!

eHow is Creating a Buzz

ehow-creating-buzz

We truly feel lucky to be a part of the eHow community.  Lately, it seems that many of our users are helping to put eHow on the map by showin’ some love on their personal blogs or podcasts.  Now it appears our members are making headlines on CNN!  CNN just aired a news story, “Moonlighting Online to Pay the Mortgage,” about a “stay at home mother of three pre-school aged kids… who started to write articles online to help make ends meet.”  CNN was particularly impressed that this eHow member earned over $1,000.00 each month which helped supplement the  family income and pay some of the household expenses.  Does this sound familiar?   Congratulations Writergig!  Writergig recently did a podcast with one of our other members, Suzanne, on tips on how to optimize your eHow articles.  We thank Writergig and all of our members who help each other and our community everyday by posting in our forums, blogging and creating eHow groups (see How to Create a Group on eHow).   Keep up the great work everyone!

eHow Features Galore

Sunday, February 8th, 2009

This week has been probably one of the busiest ones at the eHow HQ.  For the past two weeks we’ve been planning and developing various new features as well as additional eHow pages called “Topic” pages.  Offhand it may not seem like it, but an explosion of things went out, so we thought it would be nice to give our members a quick overview.

eHow Topic Pages…

topic

Find what you need in our Topic Pages.  The eHow Topic Page essentially encompasses and packages all the relevant resources on eHow for a given topic.  So, if you happen to be on a photography topic page, you’ll find a bunch of articles related to photography, but the experience is quite intuitive and it helps a normal visitor find what they need with ease.  In addition to having access to relevant articles, a Topic Page has relevant Quick Guides and blog postings by a topic expert.  The Topic Page is packed with various information.  Not to mention that it has applicable community items, such as Groups and Q&A discussions, where you can post up questions and have the community provide answers for you.

List of our Topic Pages:

Feature your five…

feature5

Customization makes things fun on the site as well as give a sense of ownership, and we’ve answered the community’s request for this one particular feature.  We unveiled this week a new profile tool, where you can pick any 5 articles from your article library and have them featured on your profile page.  This allows you to market your articles on your profile and bring more visibility to them.

I Twitter, you Twitter, we all like to Twitter…

twitter1

Twitter-ing articles has never been this easy for our members.  If you go to your email notification setting, you will be able setup your account to automatically send new articles that you’ve contributed to your Twitter account.  You can also do the same for any comments you’ve made on articles.  This is another great tool to help you promote and market your articles instantaneously.

eHow News Updates…

ehownews

Did you know we had a blog?  Well, if you are reading this, obviously you do, but it’s not surprising many folks do not know we have one.  The eHow blog is great to get up-to-date info about the site or just any relevant news that deals with the eHow community.  There’s a new small section included on your profile page (on the bottom left corner), where you can click on links to get to the eHow blog or the eHow Twitter.  You can start off your daily dose of eHow by checking out the blog and be in the k now with everything and anything about the site.

Spread the word about your published articles…

publish

As soon you publish you articles, you should, as usual, end up on a page that confirms your article being published.  Well, on this very page you should now have access to the “Share” button tool, which will allow you to immediately socialize and promote your newly published articles.

Finally…

Have you noticed the site being a little faster than usual?  We’ve done some upgrades on our server and pages on eHow should be loading up quicker.  No more going through that experience, where you’re navigating through the site and all of a sudden you hit a wall, and the page you want to get to takes awhile to load up.  Take a test drive for yourself and you’ll notice quite a difference.

We hope you find these new updates satisfying.  A lot of the upgrades were made due to the community’s requests and it’s a never ending effort to continue making the product even more better.  To be continued… more new stuff coming soon!

eHow Community Rocks Blogs, Podcasts, and More!

podcast_blog-imagesThe eHow staff started off the year of the Ox with some Chinese food and fortune cookies.  One of our editor’s fortune cookie messages was, “You are artistic and others can relate to you.”  We’re no Picassos but that got us thinking about the different ways we share our ideas with others eHow.   Whenever, you’re starting a new DIY sewing project or need to figure out how to refinish your hardwood floors, you can always find someone in our eHow community that has the answers or insightful tips.  Our community is truly a place of inspiration and learning, where we come together every day and share our passions and learn how to do just about everything.  Lately, we’ve been inspired by the number of different ways our members are sharing their articles and knowledge.  Last week, we spoke about Chameleon, who shares eHow articles on her personal coffee blog.  This week, we bring you <drum roll please> A.Suzanne Wells and Writergig!  Suzanne recently broadcasted a podcast with Writergig and shared insightful tips from how to optimize eHow articles to where they find inspirations for their articles.  These ladies definitely tapped into their inner artists and enabled other users to learn from their experiences on eHow.  Needless to say we are extremely proud of our community and feel blessed to be a part of such awesome company!
