“I Did This” Powered Up!

There are two newsworthy updates that need to be mentioned in this email—the good one and the bad one.  Don’t worry, the bad one is not as bad as you would think and is really good news in hiding.  Since custom dictates that bad news goes first, we shall start with that.

The “I Did This” button on articles is no stranger to anyone in the eHow community.  The button is on all of the eHow How To articles and it’s hard to believe that anyone could miss it.  Now, you may be wondering if we are going to remove the button.  That’s definitely not it.  In fact, we’re turning “I Did This” into a robust feature on the site where people can share their version for completing the project.  Due to this enhancement, “I Did This” member avatars will be removed from each page. Sounds pretty bad?  Not quite.  Keep reading and you’ll find out why.

So what’s the good news?  Being a community driven site, the “I Did This” feature was designed for members to share their accomplishments with others.  We’ll admit, when the feature was released it was still premature and we knew we had to do it some justice and give it a makeover.  As we mentioned above, the “I Did This” feature is now an interactive feature, which allows you to share your story through text and photos enabling you to show others how you completed the How To article you’ve read.  Since the feature has evolved into something more meaningful and technical, we needed to start off on a clean slate.

For those of you, who’ve had their “I Did This” member avatar removed from the article page.  Not to worry, we’ve placed all of your “I Did This” bookmarks in your “Projects” tab.   They are in draft mode and you can edit them at your own convenience.  Once you’re done editing, you can publish them and they will re-appear on the articles.

We’re pretty excited about this because it will allow you to revisit and give your “I Did This” more color.  You will now be able to provide a more engaging experience for readers who would like to know how you’ve accomplished a task.

We hope you’re as excited as we are and enjoy the new version of the “I Did This” feature.  Have fun showing and telling us how you’ve tackled a project!

Check out some of these great “I Did This” examples our community members have done:

1) See how member kxygen donated hair

2) See how member Rich, eHow Community Manager designed a t-shirt logo

3) See how member Jeremy spent a day in Venice Beach, California

4) See how member tommyboy2k cleared sewer lines

5) See how member Gregory removed cell phone screen scratches

Also, eHow.com is hitting the airwaves in Atlanta and Chicago in June. We’re buddying up with popular radio DJs Frank Ski and Wanda from Atlanta (V-103) and Drew Walker from Chicago (US-99.5) to spread the eHow love in those markets. Also, there will be a $1,000 sweepstake for our Atlanta and Chicago members. Participants will be asked to build out their own “I Did This” and show and tell us how they completed an everyday project. Good luck and we are looking forward to seeing your “I Did This!”

We are proud to announce that eHow.com has been awarded with this year’s CNET Webware 100 Award in the category of “Search and Reference.”  It’s a great feeling when one of the leading authorities in technological trends recognizes us as one of the best referential sites on the web.  2009 has been a great year for us; we’ve had so many accolades in a short span of time and this couldn’t have been possible without the supporters of the eHow website.  CNET has a webpage dedicated to each of the web winners and there is a special mention of our eHow members, who have helped contribute their How To knowledge to bring eHow.com’s library to over 500,000 pieces of content.  Again, thanks to everyone.  Let’s keep the momentum going and have it  known that eHow.com is the ultimate solution sharing site on the web!

eHow on Fox, Austin American Statesman, and NPR

Congratulations to everyone for all of your hard work publishing, chatting on forums and creating groups.  Once again, our active eHow community and quality content has caught the attention of some notable peeps in the news industry.  It’s awesome to see that every time we write a great article or reach out to other eHow users in our Forums, we’re getting noticed by the outside community.

Dawn Moore aka dalady on eHow, wrote a very useful dinner party article on How to Open a Bottle of Wine without a Corkscrew,” and was featured in the local Fox News affiliate in Sacramento. The Fox News piece discusses that do-it-yourself authors, like Dawn are earning  money on eHow and are also saving money by learning how to do other projects themselves,  rather than calling a repairman.  Fox also hones in on one of our key mantras from eHow General Manager, Greg Boudewijn, “if someone else can benefit from (your) knowledge, you deserve to get paid for it.” Yup -NO LIE - eHow is the best place to capitalize on your Know-it-All-ness.

And speaking of  Know-it-All-ness, the Austin American Stateman online featured Austinite, Troy Holland aka Doodlebugs in “Austin a gold mind of how-to videos.”  In their article, they write that Troy puts his Know-it-All-ness to good use and tries to write an article after work each day.  Although he’s not a professional writer, he leverages the experiences and knowledge he’s built up over the years doing various odd projects around the house.  His home is reported to be extremely energy-efficient due to his handy work.   Do you also want to make your home energy efficient like Troy? Learn how to do it by reading his article, “How to Find the Biggest Energy Waster in Your Home.”

On another note, NPR recently posted, “The How and Why of How-to Site.” In their article NPR discusses the rapid growth of how-to internet content.  They report that eHow and it’s sister site, ExpertVillage are two of the leading sites that provide how-to knowledge on the internet.  Do you want to know the secret of our sauce for success?  Honestly, it’s in our community.  These types of reports helps support one of our core beliefs that everyday people can show each other (and the rest of the online world) how to do just about everything.

Goodies, tchochkes, paraphenalia…no matter how you say it,  showing and wearing your eHow pride is awesome.  We LOVE our members’ public displays of eHow-affection.   Showing your pride on t-shirts, hats, and license plates aren’t just for sports fanatics anymore.   Now some of you guys may be thinking that the license plate in the picture above looks awfully familiar.  That’s because it belongs to our all-star member, Jimdris.   Between chatting on our forums and publishing article, he  found time to get a customized eHow license plate in the good ol’ state of Virginia.  If you guys are jealous, be the first one in your state to get an eHow plate and be sure to tell us about it!  Now for those of you guys that would prefer to wear your eHow pride, check out bmi57’s eHow hat.   In fact if you ever suffer from writer’s block and need to get your thinking cap on, I heard that this eHow hat works wonders.  We’re juuuust kidding about that of course, but bmi57’s hat must be inspirational because she  has one tasty article on “How to Make my Golden Nugget French Toast.”  On another note, Veryirie got in touch with her crafty side and created this amazing eHow doll.  She regularly writes about her craft projects and how-tos, so check out her articles and blog.  An eHow doll would look great in anyone’s work cubicle or you could probably get your kids to partake in your eHow pride as well.  Now if you’ve ever created or shown your eHow love in some creative way…send us pictures and may be we can do a “Showing Some eHow Love - Part Deux”!
